We are fortunate to have a beautiful churchyard. Being so ancient there's a higgledy-piggledy mix of tombstones and graves, some very old, others more recent, and, since we're on top of a rise, there's a beautiful view from the south porch that stretches across the graveyard down to glimpses of the River Thames. It's a haven of peace and tranquility at the heart of Southchurch.

We have a wonderful group of volunteers who meet on Wednesday mornings to make our grounds beautiful. Fuelled by tea, coffee, and biscuits they aim to incrementally improve our churchyard over time. Take a look at the latest update, which includes a review of 2025, below:
Achievements in 2025 include:
-
A new lawn to the east of the Church Hall.
-
Grave plots cleared of brambles and weeds.
-
Wild seeded sycamore's removed.
-
Wild meadow created on east side of churchyard.
-
Area near the old water tap seeded with wild hedgerow seeds.
-
Approximately 1,000 spring bulbs planted.
-
Lower branches of several trees and shrubs removed to let more light through.
-
Bird boxes and bug hotels installed.
-
Footpathe cleared for better access.
Here's looking forward to all this work bearing fruit in 2026.

If you're tempted by a couple of hours amongst nature and in good company - drop by on the first Wednesday morning of the month and see what we're up to.
