September Letter in 'Trinitas'

Please read below for the September 2019 letter, written by Fr Reid Humble, in our monthly parish magazine, Trinitas.

Dear friends,

As I write this, we are in the process of making our final preparations to say goodbye to Sheffield and move to Southend. My excitement to serve as Priest-in-Charge of Holy Trinity continues to build as the date of my licensing draws ever nearer. As ever, in these situations, you might be curious as to who I am and where I have come from. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself in what I hope will be the beginning of many encounters and conversations over the coming months and years.

Whilst serving my curacy in the Diocese of Sheffield I have fulfilled a few different roles. For the first two years I was the curate at Rotherham Minster. Then, for the last year I was the curate at St. Mary’s Walkley and an Associate Anglican Chaplain at the University of Sheffield. However, I am not a native to Sheffield, nor the UK for that matter. I was born and raised in Texas, living most of my life in a suburb of Austin. I then went to University in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where I studied Biblical Studies and Theology. I was not raised an Anglican and it was during my time studying that I discovered the Episcopal Church in the USA and was confirmed. It was also during this time that I first met Charlotte. She had moved from Southampton to play basketball at the same University I was attending. After we both graduated, Charlotte moved back to the UK to complete a Master’s degree at the University of Sheffield and I followed suit, which is how we first ended up in Sheffield. Happily, she agreed to marry me!

In Sheffield, I completed an MA in Biblical Studies Research and then naturally went to work for a bank. At the same time, I was going through the discernment process in the diocese and was selected to train for ordination to the priesthood. We moved to Cambridge in the summer of 2012 where I trained at Westcott House for four years. After training I returned to Sheffield for my ordinations.

When I am not working, Charlotte and I enjoy good food and wine. However, I’m prone to finding ways of mixing these into parish life as well! I am also a fan of all manner of sports but stick to cycling and running myself.

By the time you read this we will have moved into the Rectory and begun making it home. Feel free to stop and say hello if you are passing by. I hope that many of you will be able to join me at my licensing on 9 September at which time we can celebrate the beginning of this new season for us. In the meantime, be assured that I am praying for you all daily.

With every blessing,

Fr Reid Humble
